Architectural Projects > Freeman st Mural

This mural documents an event that occurs on the street where my family lives in Coconut Grove. At the far end of the block, a giant Ceiba tree grows green pods with cotton and black seeds in it. When the fruit is ripe, green parrots come and eat the seeds, leaving a white cotton snow on our street. They used to use this cotton to stuff mattresses and pillows in Cuba. The parrots are spooked by a swallowtail kite, and fly through a Flamboyant tree which is in our yard - at the opposite end of the street.
My Grandmother, Madeleine Portuondo, painted the Peacock to commemorate the peacocks who roam our neighborhood. I owe a great thanks to all my family and friends who helped to put some glass on the wall when they came over to visit.
